Incisional / Recurrent Hernia Surgery
What causes recurrence of a hernia?
Usually, if the underlying cause of the hernia persists (such as asthma, obesity, etc.), or the abdominal muscle wall tone remains poor, the hernia can recur.
What is an Incisional Hernia?
A hernia which develops at the site of a previous surgical incision is called an Incisional hernia.
These repairs may be performed Laparoscopically, Robotically or by open method.
- 1. Laparoscopic/ Robotic IPOM This involves placement of a mesh inside the peritoneal cavity.
- 2. Laparoscopic/ Robotic/ Hybrid IPOM Plus This involves closing the defect with stitches and placement of a mesh.
- 3. Abdominal Wall Reconstruction This is a term applied for multiple newer techniques, and covers almost all large defects over the abdominal wall.
- 4. Open surgery
What kind of mesh is used for Recurrent or Incisional Hernia surgery?
A dual surface (composite) or poly-propylene mesh (available in different shapes and sizes) is used to cover all hernial defects, and it is fixed using stitches or tackers.
How soon can I get back to work?
Most patients are discharged within 24 to 48 hours after the surgery, and can return to work in less than a week.
What precautions do I need to take after the surgery?
After the surgery, you need to make sure you do not lift any heavy weights or bend forwards. Chances of recurrence increase if there is any kind of strain on the abdominal wall.
