Inguinal / Groin Hernia Surgery
Inguinal hernia surgeries are now most commonly performed by Laparoscopy. These can also be performed with the help of the Robot or by open method.
- 1. Laparoscopic/ Robotic TAPP This approach allows us to see the entire abdominal cavity. Hidden hernias maybe diagnosed with this technique which makes it a popular approach.
- 2. Laparoscopic TEP/ E-TEP In this approach, the abdominal wall is not opened completely, thus preserving the integrity of the abdominal cavity.
- 3. Open method This is the most conventional method of repairing a hernia, and is now used mainly for extremely large hernias or in cases of emergencies.
What kind of mesh is used for Inguinal Hernia surgery?
A standard poly-propylene mesh (available in different shapes and sizes) is used to cover all hernial defects, and it is fixed using stitches or tackers.
How soon can I get back to work?
Most patients are discharged within 24 to 48 hours after the surgery, and can return to work in less than a week.
What precautions do I need to take after the surgery?
After the surgery, you need to make sure you do not lift any heavy weights or bend forwards. Chances of recurrence increase if there is any kind of strain on the abdominal wall.
