The appendix is a vestigial organ, i.e. it is a functionless organ in the human body. It is attached to the first part of the large intestine. In human adults, the appendix serves no use.
If the appendix gets infected (Acute Appendicitis), it needs to be removed surgically. Since the appendix serves no function, its removal does not cause any harm to the body.
The Appendix is removed by 3 small cuts (0.5 cm each) on the abdomen by a laparoscopic approach. Recovery is very fast, and patients are discharged the day after the surgery.
