Revision Bariatric Surgery
What is it?
Bariatric Surgeon In Mumbai
Revision Bariatric Surgery is performed to alter or undo a previous weight loss surgery. The two currently popular procedures, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (gastric bypass) and Mini Gastric Bypass (mini bypass), while successful, also require occasional revision. Of the older weight loss procedures, the revision rate for the Gastric Banding Surgery (also known as lap band or Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding) is more than 10% during the first two years for either device-related problems or unsatisfactory weight loss. Likewise, the revision rate for either gastric bypass is roughly 5-10% after 5 years for either troublesome complications or for unsatisfactory weight loss.
The sleeve gastrectomy, though technically an irreversible procedure, can be revised to a Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, Mini Gastric Bypass, or a sleeve + DJ Bypass, depending on the indication, anatomy and various patient-related factors.
Who requires a revision surgery?
If you have any of the following conditions, you are a candidate for revision bariatric surgery:
- Excessive weight loss
- Severe vitamin/ mineral deficiencies
- Inability to eat adequate amounts of food
- Complications of previous surgery
- Excessive nausea and vomiting
- Markedly increased frequency of loose stools disrupting daily activities
- Dumping syndrome
- Marginal ulceration
- Malignancy
How are these weight loss surgeries revised??
Revision Bariatric Surgery can be performed by a minimally invasive surgical method. Usually 4-5 small cuts of 0.5 – 1 cm are made on the abdomen. The surgery is then performed Laparoscopically or Robotically, using highly advanced technology to make it safe.
Depending upon the indication for surgery, the surgery can be revised in 1 of 2 ways:
- Conversion to normal anatomy
- Conversion to another weight loss surgery
How long do I have to stay in the hospital for the surgery?
Patients are admitted the night before the surgery, and usually stay in the hospital for 1 or 2 nights after the procedure.
How soon can I return to work?
Most patients return to their routine activities 1 day after the surgery, and resume work 1 week after the surgery.
